Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) — Advanced Review
The thermostat that invented the category, rebuilt well enough to lead it again.
The verdict
The fourth-gen Nest scores at the top of its category because top-scoring independent reviews land on a simple claim the testing supports: it remains the only thermostat whose algorithm genuinely learns and adjusts your schedule automatically, and this generation is smarter than ever. High-scoring expert verdicts credit the redesign — a 60% larger domed display that's readable across the room — along with Adaptive Eco, broader no-C-wire HVAC compatibility, and a bundled remote temperature sensor. Reviewers frame it as a complete reimagining of the product that defined the category. The honest gripes: long-time Nest owners are forced into the Google Home app, and a minority of wiring setups still frustrate installation.
Rated by category
- Design & Display. The larger edge-to-edge domed lens is the best-looking thermostat display reviewers have tested.
- Learning & Energy Features. Auto-adjusting schedules plus Adaptive Eco deliver real hands-off savings; still the category's only true learner.
- Setup & Compatibility. No C-wire required and broader HVAC support, though a minority of homes still hit wiring snags.
- App Experience. Google Home has improved but the forced migration from the Nest app remains the loudest owner complaint.
What reviewers praise
- schedule learning that actually works, hands-off
- striking domed display readable across the room
- wireless temperature sensor included
- works with more HVAC systems, no C-wire needed
Worth knowing
- mandatory move to the Google Home app frustrates longtime Nest users
- some wiring setups still hit installation snags
Price and value
At $279.99 it's one of the priciest consumer thermostats, but the bundled temperature sensor and genuinely autonomous energy savings make the premium easier to defend than most smart-home splurges.
How it compares
Ecobee's Smart Thermostat Premium counters with built-in air-quality monitoring and a speaker, but the Nest wins on design, display, and the set-and-forget learning that no rival has matched.
The bottom line
The thermostat that invented the category, rebuilt well enough to lead it again.
How this review works
This isn't one editor's opinion. MyBase's Advanced Review is our own AI-synthesized editorial assessment: it draws on the published verdicts of the industry's most trusted independent expert reviewers and testing publications, alongside large pools of verified-owner reviews, and weighs them together into a single clear verdict. Expert testing is weighed alongside real-world owner consensus, so the rating reflects how a product actually performs — not how it's marketed.
