HiFiMan Sundara — Advanced Review
The insider handshake of hi-fi: the planar headphone everyone tells you to buy first.
The verdict
The Sundara scores this high because it is the rare audiophile product where measurement labs and enthusiasts agree: independent lab testing confirms a neutral, slightly bright tuning with the tight, controlled 'planar bass' the category is loved for, and audio specialists give it a top recommendation as the accessible way into high-end listening. Some go further and simply call it the planar standard — the reference other mid-fi planars are judged against. Years of owner consensus back the sound while flagging the practical realities: it is an open-back headphone that isolates nothing, and it rewards a proper amp. At its current official price it is one of the most unanimous recommendations in audio.
Rated by category
- Sound Quality. Neutral-bright signature with fast, textured planar bass; resolution that embarrasses headphones at twice the price.
- Comfort. Light clamp and suspension strap wear well for hours, though the cups run warm in summer.
- Build Quality. Matte metal yokes and headband feel solid; early-batch QC grumbles persist in owner threads.
- Value. At the current official price it is arguably the best sound-per-dollar purchase in headphones.
What reviewers praise
- planar-magnetic detail and bass control well above its price
- neutral tuning labs and enthusiasts both endorse
- comfortable suspension headband for long sessions
- the consensus gateway into audiophile listening
Worth knowing
- open-back design leaks sound and blocks nothing — home listening only
- benefits noticeably from a headphone amp; phone output runs it quiet
Price and value
Launched at $499 and long sold at $299, the official store now runs it at $179 — at that figure reviewers stop hedging entirely; there is no cheaper admission to genuine planar-magnetic sound.
How it compares
Against the Sennheiser HD 600 family it trades midrange romance for detail and bass grip, and HiFiMan's own Edition XS only adds soundstage for more money — the Sundara stays the first planar to buy.
The bottom line
The insider handshake of hi-fi: the planar headphone everyone tells you to buy first.
How this review works
This isn't one editor's opinion. MyBase's Advanced Review is our own AI-synthesized editorial assessment: it draws on the published verdicts of the industry's most trusted independent expert reviewers and testing publications, alongside large pools of verified-owner reviews, and weighs them together into a single clear verdict. Expert testing is weighed alongside real-world owner consensus, so the rating reflects how a product actually performs — not how it's marketed.
