HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S — Advanced Review
The cult keyboard for programmers and writers who type all day and want the quietest, most refined keystroke made.
The verdict
The Type-S holds a devoted rating because reviewers who live in a terminal keep reaching the same conclusion: independent reviewers call the silenced Topre keystrokes a refined leap past ordinary mechanicals, and enthusiast press flatly names it the best typing experience in the business. Hardware testers agree on the feel while being honest that the 60% HHKB layout — control where caps lock sits, no dedicated arrows — is built for a specific kind of user. Long-term owners corroborate both halves: the electrocapacitive switches stay consistent for a decade-plus, and the layout rewires you until other keyboards feel wrong. It is the definition of an insider's tool rather than a crowd-pleaser.
Rated by category
- Typing Feel. Silenced 45g Topre domes deliver the deep, uniform 'thock' reviewers consistently rank at the top of the category.
- Build & Switches. Electrocapacitive switches rated far beyond MX lifespans; case is sturdy but plastic at a premium price.
- Connectivity. Four Bluetooth slots plus USB-C wired; DIP-switch remapping is flexible, though there's no backlight or software suite.
- Value. Costs several good mechanicals, but owners keep them for a decade — the cost per year is better than it looks.
What reviewers praise
- silenced Topre switches with a typing feel reviewers call best-in-class
- Bluetooth for four devices plus USB-C wired
- decade-plus switch longevity and cult resale value
- compact layout keeps hands on the home row
Worth knowing
- HHKB layout has a genuine learning curve — no dedicated arrow keys
- expensive for a plastic-cased 60% board
Price and value
Listed at $385 and currently $299 on the official US store, it is one of the most expensive 60% boards sold; you are paying for Topre switches and the layout's pedigree, and devotees consider it money well spent while everyone else should try one first.
How it compares
Nothing else combines Topre silence with this layout — Realforce boards offer the switches in full size for less, and a Keychron Q60 imitates the layout with cheaper MX feel, but the Type-S remains the board the originals are measured against.
The bottom line
The cult keyboard for programmers and writers who type all day and want the quietest, most refined keystroke made.
How this review works
This isn't one editor's opinion. MyBase's Advanced Review is our own AI-synthesized editorial assessment: it draws on the published verdicts of the industry's most trusted independent expert reviewers and testing publications, alongside large pools of verified-owner reviews, and weighs them together into a single clear verdict. Expert testing is weighed alongside real-world owner consensus, so the rating reflects how a product actually performs — not how it's marketed.
