Rimowa Original Cabin — Advanced Review
The investment-grade aluminum carry-on for frequent travelers who want a near-indestructible icon and will pay for it.
The verdict
The Rimowa Original Cabin is the icon of premium aluminum luggage, and reviewers treat it as the aspirational benchmark for a rigid carry-on. Independent reviewers note its grooved anodized-aluminum shell is exceptionally rugged, its multi-wheel system rolls smoothly, and the build quality and serviceable hardware justify treating it as a long-term investment backed by a lengthy warranty. Owner reviews echo that it ages gracefully — dents become patina rather than failure — and the brand's repair support reinforces the longevity case. The main reservations are its steep price and the reality that aluminum shows scuffs and weighs more than polycarbonate, which is why it lands at 4.7 rather than higher.
Rated by category
- Durability & Build. Grooved anodized aluminum shell shrugs off bin abuse; functional lifetime warranty backs it.
- Maneuverability. Silent, near-frictionless multiwheel spinners are among the best in luggage.
- Design & Prestige. Instantly recognizable icon; the aluminum look is the reason most buyers choose it.
- Value. Heavy at ~9.5 lb, dents cosmetically, and starts near $1,430; you pay heavily for the badge.
What reviewers praise
- rugged anodized-aluminum shell
- smooth multi-wheel rolling
- premium serviceable build
- long warranty and repairability
Worth knowing
- very high price
- aluminum scuffs and dents and is heavier than polycarbonate
Price and value
Starting around $1,430, it is luxury-tier pricing where a large slice is brand cachet; worth it only if you want the aluminum statement and lifetime functional repair, not if you judge purely on packing space per dollar.
How it compares
Its wheels and warranty beat most rivals, but Away and Monos deliver similar function for a fifth of the cost, and even Rimowa's own lighter polycarbonate Essential packs more and weighs less, so the aluminum Original is a style splurge, not a value pick.
The bottom line
The investment-grade aluminum carry-on for frequent travelers who want a near-indestructible icon and will pay for it.
How this review works
This isn't one editor's opinion. MyBase's Advanced Review is our own AI-synthesized editorial assessment: it draws on the published verdicts of the industry's most trusted independent expert reviewers and testing publications, alongside large pools of verified-owner reviews, and weighs them together into a single clear verdict.
