Bose SoundLink Max — Advanced Review
The pick for those who want big, durable Bose sound and will carry the extra heft for it.
The verdict
The independent testing labs position the SoundLink Max as Bose's premium portable, with testing crediting it for full, bass-rich sound that stays clean and controlled at high volume where smaller speakers distort. Reviewers consistently praise its rugged, IP67-rated build and the carry handle that makes its size manageable, plus a long battery life that holds up in real-world use. Owner reviews mirror the experts on sound and durability, and the 4.7 reflects broad agreement that it is among the best-sounding speakers in its size class. The trade-offs are weight and price, not audio.
Rated by category
- Sound. Bose's biggest, fullest portable sound — deep bass and clear mids that fill a room, per reviewers.
- Durability. IP67 dust/water resistance and a rugged build with a removable strap; feels road-ready.
- Portability. Excellent for its class but heavy (~2.1kg) — more a haul-it-to-the-patio than a backpack speaker.
- Value. Premium price; lacks a mic/speakerphone and Auracast at launch (added later via update).
What reviewers praise

Price and value
At around $399 it's priced at the premium end of portable speakers, but the class-leading sound and IP67 toughness make it worth it for buyers who want the best big-room Bluetooth audio.
How it compares
It's the pick for sound quality among large portables, beating the JBL Xtreme 4 and Sonos Move 2 on tonal richness, though the Sonos adds Wi-Fi/AirPlay and the JBL is lighter and cheaper.
The bottom line
The pick for those who want big, durable Bose sound and will carry the extra heft for it.
How this review works
This isn't one editor's opinion.
